We encounter important symbols in the Holy Scripture: the two trees in the garden (the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), marriage, the Sabbath, the lost garment, the sacrifice and the lambskin.
We have asked ourselves what Abraham is really sacrificing in Genesis 22. It is not about the son, but about the principle of sacrifice - that which shows our spiritual dependence. The trees symbolize two worlds: The tree of life stands for spiritual dependence on God, the tree of death for the break with this law. In life, we must understand: Everything follows a law - first take, then give. Man needs love from God, because only there are his spiritual needs such as justice or security fulfilled. The ability to love is not proof that love is already within us. It must first be taken from God.
Evil arose through error and separation from God. Lucifer and man mistakenly believed that they could give love from themselves - which is selfishness. This error has placed the “tree of death” at the entrance of the spirit and leads us to try to live from ourselves. Man believes he loves others - in fact he only uses them to satisfy his needs. The law says: you can only give or take, never both at the same time. This is why people can no longer satisfy their need for love and die.
The two trees also represent the Ten Commandments: We are to eat from the tree of life in order to live. We must not eat from the tree of death. Without error, there would be no prohibition. On marriage: In Genesis 2, God shows that Adam is to take of his spirit at the entrance and love Eve at the exit - a picture of Christ and the church.
What is the church? Is it the people or the place? And what does Jerusalem mean as the bride of Jesus? It is not the people themselves, but the result of their union with Christ. It is important to recognize that we humans are not the bride of the Lamb. Rather, we are the result of this marriage - just as children are the result of a marriage. We explore these topics in greater depth in the third installment of the series “Allusions - Images - Symbols”.
