The pharaoh does not know God and sees no reason to fear him. He lives in the darkness of evil and exercises power and control over the people by ordering the Israelites to work even harder (Exodus 5:7-8). One wonders: Do difficulties always precede liberation? The Israelites complain to Moses and ask Pharaoh for help, but he only reacts with greater anger. Moses asks God, “Why are you doing this evil to your people?” (Exodus 5:22). Let us take a closer look at God's answer.
To this day, many Christians do not know God's name – his identity: Who is God? And who am I? Through his guidance, God wants to show us that we are his children and that he wants to deliver us. This connection between child and father is difficult to comprehend. Many Christians unconsciously see themselves as separated from God and believe that they are dependent on Pharaoh or the world. But in truth, we are all dependent on God alone, our lives come only from him.
God wants to reveal his name so that we can call him Father. Even though Pharaoh's heart remains hardened, this story shows us how important it is to recognize God's power and trust in him. Only when people reject God's love – like Lucifer – does the struggle end and self-deception become final. For love and selfishness cannot coexist. You can find out what all this means in detail in the third part of our series “Exodus.”
