7 - The Bread and Water of Life | Exodus

The joy of leaving Egypt did not last long. The people grumbled, but with God on their side, there is always a solution. God explained to them the origin of suffering (Exodus 15:26) and promised them: “I will not bring any disease on you... for I am the LORD, your healer.”

Illness arises in the heart when we involuntarily transgress God's law. God gives the effect according to His grace. Thus, what is hidden in the heart becomes visible. Man must recognize his dependence on God and follow His voice. Many pretend to be followers of Jesus, but their hearts are far from God. Sickness and obvious sins show that a person is addicted and has no control over themselves.

When the king became ill, he sought miracle healers instead of God's counsel. God warned against this dependence. Although we can go to normal doctors, true healing comes from God by keeping His law and living His love. Health therefore depends on us and on God. He only allows effects that help us.

What does the manna in the desert mean? It reminds us that we do not live by bread alone, but by God's word. Christ is the true bread from heaven (John 6:53–58). Through him we return to God. The water of life also stands for Christ and spiritual dependence on his word.

The experiences of the Israelites show that we need a living connection to God. Christ is that connection – the bread and water of life. Our eating and drinking should point to him. God offers it, but each person must accept it for themselves. Spiritual dependence is one of the greatest challenges. Those who do not understand it will miss their salvation. As children of God, let us grow in this knowledge and know that even in difficulties there is a divine solution, and we should stop grumbling. The seventh part of the series “Exodus” explores these thoughts in greater depth.
