Lead through understanding and genuine listening

For me, leadership means one thing above all else: establishing genuine contact. Not just through clear instructions, but through genuine understanding. And that starts with listening – really listening. Sometimes, just pausing for a moment is enough to open up new avenues.

These three techniques will help you do that:

Mirroring instead of correcting: Repeat what your counterpart is saying in your own words: “If I understand you correctly, you mean...” This shows genuine interest.

The 5-second rule: Sounds simple – but it's powerful. It gives you space to think and prevents impulsive reactions.

Notes for others: Write down what is important to your counterpart. This shows genuine interest.

I know from my own experience that active listening builds trust and understanding—which makes a big difference in leadership. Which technique will you try first?
